For Teachers

Meeting the needs and interests of the students.

Learning experiences for this unit will assist students to:

  • manage th eir everyday activities
  • utilise opportunities for the development of creativity, flexibility and innovativeness
  • evaluate and use the products of technology
  • find, make judgements about and use information effectively
  • interact with others
  • create and interpret texts
  • develop understandings about the world, and
  • develop an appreciation of language, literature and computer technology

Outcomes & Indicators

Science & Technology

IC S3.2 ~ Creates and Evaluates information products and processes, demonstrating consideration of type of media, form and audience.

  • Works collaboratively to research and develop a multimedia presentation for communicating about weather concepts.
  • Selects reference material and checks its accuracy through identifying sources, currency of information, purpose and bias.

PS S3.5 ~ Creates and evaluates products and services, demonstrating consideration of sustainablity, aesthetic, cultural, safety and functional issues.

  • Works collaboratively to evaluate the process used to design and construct weather related devices.

ES S3.6 ~ Recognises that the earth is the source of most materials and resources, and describes phenomena and processes, both natural and human, that form and change the earth over time.

  • Uses a thermometer and rain gauge to record local weather.
  • Works collaboratively to design a presentation based on factual information gathered about weather concepts.

DM S3.8 ~ Develops and resolves a design task by planning, implementing, managing and evaluating design processes.

  • Works collaboratively to evaluate the process used to design and construct weather related devices.
  • Constructs a working model to measure weather phenomena.

UT S3.9 ~ Evaluates, selects and uses a range of equipment, computer-based technology, materials and other resources to meet the requirements and constraints of investigation and design tasks.

  • Uses bookmarked web sites to research a particular topic.
  • Uses a variety of components and materials to construct various weather devices.
  • Uses a thermometer and rain gauge to record local weather.

Human Society and It's Environment

EN S2.6 ~ Describes poeples interactions with environments and identifies responsible ways of interacting with environments.

  • Identifies processes used by people to design weather tools.

  • Uses several strategies for finding information in texts.
  • Understands and uses various text layouts to access information.
  • Identifies and uses various resources (eg: texts, Internet).

WS 3.12 ~ Produces texts in a fluent and legible style and uses computer technology to present these effectively in a variety of ways.

  • Uses computer software programs and associated technology to format a variety of texts.
  • Varies font and layout to suit particular audience and purpose.
  • Chooses appropriate graphics to accompany text.
  • Uses multimedia software to create published works incorporating text, graphics, sound and animation.

Mathematics

SG5 ~ A single symbol may represent several objects.

  • Construct and interpret picture graphs.

SG6 ~ Information may be represented by a variety of different graphs.

  • Interpret and draw line, bar and pie graphs.

MT7 ~ A formal unit for measuring temperature is the degree Celsius.

  • Estimate, measure and record temperatures in degrees Celsius.
  • Measure and graph changes in temperatures.

MT8 ~ Instruments to measure temperature in a variety of ways have been devised.

  • Uses various thermometers.
  • Describe the differences in design between various thermometers.
